Along Horbury Lane

STARTING POINTS

The Arundel Public House at the junction of The Common, Chapeltown Road, Church Street, Ecclesfield.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

A walk in the green belt to the north of Sheffield. Short lengths of the walk skirt housing development but this does not detract from the rural nature of the walk. About a third of the walk is on a surfaced lane. It is not suitable for pushchairs due to some muddy areas following bad weather.

ROUTE

From the junction near to the Arundel public house, walk up the hill along Chapeltown Road with the recreation fields on the right hand side. After some 300 yards turn left after the large red brick house onto the public bridleway. Continue along this route past Hunshelf Quarry on the right where stone was excavated to build the main building of Ecclesfield Secondary School. You will hear and see a wide variety of birds on this stretch.

A little further along there are excellent views of the farmland and Grenoside Woods beyond. At this point, on the right is a large patch of yellow Broom, a low growing shrub.

Follow the path further on where it bends to the left then to the right. It can be quite muddy here. As the bridleway emerges onto the hardcore lane take the footpath on the left, go downhill over the small stream, and up to The Horbury. Windmill Hill Farm on your right has a picturesque facade - even today. Keep on this lane until you join Chapel Road.

Bear left opposite the bungalows for about 100 yards. Look for the footpath on the left and keep the old stone cottages (Sweet Pea Row) to your right.

Keep left along the footpath past the children's play area on the right. You can either walk straight on up the path adjacent to the back gardens of the properties, or bear left along the foot-path through Foxfield Spring Wood.

In season there are many woodland flowers. As you leave the wood climb over the stone steps into the field.

Follow the footpath keeping close to the woodland on the left then, when the wood finishes continue uphill slightly right towards the stone bungalow. On the right there are good views of Barnes Hall.

Keep the bungalow on your right and follow the path to the field corner and through the kissing gate. There is a seat here dedicated to the late Cllr E Wadsworth, Chairman of Ecclesfield Parish Council 1978 - 1979. Turn left down Elliott Lane with fine views of Keppel's Column and Hoober Stand across to the left of the horizon.

Continue down the lane past Whitley Hall Hotel on the right. At the bottom of Elliott Lane turn left into Whitley Lane and along this back to the start of the walk.
